Back for my third year as varsity cats head coach at Neuqua Valley. Be sure to watch the Focused and Ferocious video about the 2018 season.
Following up the phenomenal 2017 season where the Neuqua Valley Wildcats Boys Lacrosse team went to the state semi finals, we had big hopes for a return in 2018.
I officially became the second longest tenured Coach in program history, passing my coach for 2006/07 seasons, Tim Hurst, and just one season behind the man who started the program, Dave Neff, who held a 4 year reign from 2001-2004.
2018 marks the first year lacrosse will be an IHSA sport in Illinois. I was re-hired as head coach officially by the school over the summer.
On Friday February 2nd, we had our player/parent meeting at Neuqua. I presented some stuff, went well. Then on Wednesday February 7th, the sectionals were set for lacrosse. We were placed in the most south sectional, putting us with teams like Lemont, Lincoln Way, Dunlap, Andrew, and Providence. A little strange since we wouldn’t be playing teams from our conference in the playoffs. As usual, despite New Trier and Loyola only being 8/10ths of a mile a part, they were put in different sectionals and super sectionals. Set to not meet until the finals. On Wednesday February 21st, I picked up 75 helmets and packed em all into my car.
Now that we are a sport, that means more media coverage. The daily herald put out an article with some quotes from me in it on February 21st.
Lax season officially begins with tryouts on Monday February 26th. We even got to practice on school grounds right behind the stadium for the first time ever.
On Thursday March 1st, JV practices inside the school at 6am. Varsity distributes their new white “s” helmets. Neuqua has never had a white helmet before, as they had always been navy with gold chin in the past. Big changes this year included all new uniforms for both Varsity and JV.
The first week of march includes hail at practice, a snowy scrimmage and some classroom film work.
Monday March 12th was team photo day. Our Neuqua coaching apparel also arrived, including our nice warm parkas.
We had a snowy practice followed by some sunshine on Tuesday March 13th.
Thursday March 15th was a nice annual team dinner at Dario’s restaurant, Capri Sogno, in Plainfield.
On March 16th another newspaper article came out with some quotes from me. Woo hoo.

Monday April 16th we had a team dinner at Potocsnak’s. I also coached up some 8U boys over the weekend.

Senior Day. We beat Huntley 14-3 with seniors playing all sorts of positions including goalie. Gonna miss these boys
Wednesday May 16th
Lose to Lincoln Way 4-11. They ran a zone, but the game didn’t matter since we would most likely play them in a week in the sectional final. Time to prep for a zone. JV finishes the season with a W!

Wednesday May 29th
4th round of the playoffs. Quarter Finals. Super-Sectionals.
Playing GBW for the third time this year, this time at neutral site Downer’s Grove. The stands were packed for this back and forth game, as we took a 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter proved to be a wild one, with crazy back and forth action including some insane saves on both ends. They take a 6-5 lead with just under 3 minutes left. They win the faceoff, we get a penalty and they score 2 empty netters to send us home, 5-8. Second most exciting game to ever coach. Last year’s quarter final would be #1 since we got the W. Great lacrosse and a great season, sad to see it come to an end.
On Monday June 4th we had our Club Banquet at Bolingbook golf club. Business as usual! Great way to close out another historic season.

Despite bowing out of the IHSA state tournament in the quarter finals, we had another fantastic record setting year. We set a school record 21 wins and 3 losses, best start to a season at 12-0 and 18-1, back to back Dupage Valley conference champions for first time since 2005-06, St Viator tournament champs for the first time, 7 all conference selections, 2 all state selections (first and only since 2006), third quarter finals appearance, and first IHSA season in school history. I am now the most winningest coach in Neuqua history with a 52-14 record over 3 seasons. despite there being 12 coaches over 18 years of lacrosse, I’ll take it as an accomplishment. We will miss our 13 seniors and welcome them as alumni, but look forward to returning 15 underclassmen for 2019. Go Cats.
Special thanks to my assistant coaches from last year, Dario, Dicken, and Eble, & JV Coach, Coach Shotts.
The work continues. See you in 2019.
Go Cats
