Let's Talk 10 Podcasts #6

Okayyyyyyy. Back at it again, with another 10 podcasts. I do too much of driving, running, cooking, working, and sitting around and I need something to occupy the silence. In case you don’t know, I’ve already done this five other times, so feel free to check out my other 50 podcasts I listen to:

10 of my Favorite Singular Story Podcasts (#5) - February 2019
Up (4) Another 10 Podcasts To Check Out In 2018 - October 2018
10 Podcasts (X3) To Listen To In 2018 - February 2018
10 More Podcasts You Should Listen to Today - October 2017
Top 10 Podcasts To Listen To Today - April 2017

All of the podcasts on this blog are talk radio podcasts. Just people sitting around a table with some microphones, so most episodes last for an hour or two… I’ve paired each podcast with a video clip of the show this time around. The topics covered vary, so let’s jump into another 10 podcasts I listen to. Here we gooooooo.

10. Beyond The Pine

“The gang gathers weekly to discuss vaping, shooting films, and their personal lives with occasional celebrity guests.”

Hosted by Steven Suptic and YouTubers Sugar Pine 7, I’ve only watched a few of their youtube videos which are pretty funny, but I enjoy their podcast. This podcast is 4 or 5 guys sitting around chatting about relevant news, YouTube drama, podcast drama and more. A weekly podcast with a pretty dope name and logo. It remind me of conversations I would have with my friends.

9. Your Mom’s House with Christina P. and Tom Segura

“Your Mom's House is a comedy podcast hosted by married comedians Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky. The podcast has far ranging conversations, discussing topics such as ongoing events, comedy, to the daily life of the two co-hosts.”

The married comedian duo host super long episodes which often entail comedian guests, YouTube news, funny internet videos, and other random things going on in the world. Pretty funny stuff, although you have to sift through the advertisements and lengthy episodes, some upwards of 3 hours long. I find myself laughing throughout the podcasts, I just don’t always have three hours to try and listen to it all! Your Mom’s House comes out once a week.

5yourmomshouse.jpg

8. StarTalk Radio

“StarTalk is a podcast on space, science, and popular culture hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, with various comic and celebrity co-hosts and frequent guests from the worlds of science and entertainment.”

Hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, this science podcast has awesome discussions about science and life. I have loved the episodes with guests that are interesting to me. Again, I don’t listen to every single episode, as many of the topics covered are way over my head, but there are some solid topics on this pod that will get your brain thinking. StarTalk is a weekly podcast.

7. Impaulsive

“The world's greatest, most thought-provoking, mentally stimulating podcast in the history of mankind... hosted by a bunch of idiots.”

This podcast is hosted by famous and controversial YouTuber, Logan Paul. If you don’t frequent YouTube, you might know him from the Japanese Suicide Forest video. But anyway, this podcast is Logan and a typical East Coast guy named Mike who often have on young and upcoming guests. This podcast started off a little immature in my opinion, but has become one of the better to watch and listen to podcasts out there. You just sometimes have to get through Mike talking over everyone. Check out new episodes every Monday Wednesday Friday.

7impaulsive.jpg

6. No Jumper

“Coolest podcast in the world.”

Podcast hosted by YouTuber Adam22 with mostly rappers, porn stars, and YouTubers as guests. His girlfriend Lena The Plug often co-hosts with him as well. Adam can be a little intimidating at first with all his tattoos, but he does a great job interviewing his guests, often while smoking weed or drinking. A little on the edgy side, but pretty professional given the guests and set up. Sometimes you get one episode a week, sometimes four. Always worth a listen. Check out his episode with Dennis Rodman below.

5. Pardon My Take

“Big Cat & PFT deliver the loudest and most correct sports takes in the history of the spoken word. Daily topics, guests, and an inability to tell what the hosts might be doing will make this your new favorite sports talk show.”

This Barstool Sports podcast headed by Big Cat and PFT is released 3 times a week. They have hilarious conversations with big named guests every episodes, often being sarcastic, but making good points. I don’t listen to every episode, but whenever I do, it is a good and funny time. Each episode they do a Mt Rushmore of “Fill in the blank” where they name their top answer to for example: Being average, farm animals, back up quarterbacks… In each episode there is also an interview or two, usually with some sort of athlete, or sports related guest. I like to think of this as “real sports radio” podcast, in the sense of your friends are just talking sports with no filter.

9pardonmytake.jpg

4. H3 Podcast

“The H3 podcast is a division of YouTubers H3H3. Their content mostly consists of reaction videos and sketch comedy in which they satirize internet culture.”

YouTuber H3H3 (aka Ethan Klein and his wife Hila) bring in guests and discuss YouTube drama along with other internet news. They love to call out other internet stars and often mock what traditional media calls “news". This podcast comes out twice a week, and while this podcast is a bit hit or miss with me, I really enjoy the podcast episodes with YouTuber Gus Johnson or OG YouTuber, now comedian Bo Burnham. They are linked below.

4h3.jpg

3. Call Her Daddy

“Follow along vlogger Alexandra Cooper and best friend Sofia Franklyn as the duo dives into the explicit details of their life in NYC. In their 20s, the two exploit the f*ck out of their lives, making you feel a hell of a lot better about yours.”

Another Barstool podcast on the list that has blown up lately. It is all about relationships, sex, and embarrassing stories from the female perspective. The two hosts, Alex and Sofia don’t hold back with being upfront and bold about the topics covered. And they make sure their thoughts on how women should be running the sex game and why you should “call her daddy” are known to all. A little offensive (to some) and inappropriate (to others), some of the things they say or stories they tell are so absurd, they often makes me laugh out loud, although episodes can also drag and the hosts can be a little annoying… Episodes come weekly

3callherdaddy.jpg

2. Making Sense with Sam Harris

“Join Sam Harris—neuroscientist, philosopher, and best-selling author—as he explores some of the most important questions about the human mind, society, and current events.”

Take a big flip in the opposite direction of the last podcast, the Making Sense podcast is hosted by intellect Sam Harris and will get you thinking and using your brain. Nolan got me turned on to this one, as it used to be called, Waking Up With Sam Harris. Sam often has on other philosophical guests and discusses important topics that will make you question the life you are living. His voice is also very soothing and smooth to listen to. This podcast comes out once a week.

2makingsense.jpg

1. Joe Rogan Experience

“5, 4, 3, 2, 1…… The Joe Rogan Experience is a free audio and video podcast hosted by American comedian, actor, sports commentator, martial artist and television host Joe Rogan.”

Joe Rogan is by far the greatest conversationalist. There are so many great episodes, and they come out almost daily, as he sometimes records 2 episodes a day. Depending on the guest, Joe will often drink or smoke while discussing deep topics, current events and worldwide theories. His discussions are always entertaining and he is by far the best “talk” podcast you should dive into first. Guests range from Elon Musk to Dale Earnhardt Jr to Lance Armstrong to Steve-O to Alex Jones. There are over 1300 interviews, so definitely find someone you would like to hear talk.

I hope you enjoyed this blog about another 10 podcasts I listen to. That takes us to 60 pods I try to get to every week. Don’t forget to check out the other 50 I have posted about before (links at the top).

You can get all podcasts for free by downloading on itunes, listening on the websites (links provided above), stream on spotify, or use the podcast app on your phone.

And as always, are there any podcasts that you suggest I listen to, specifically talk radio podcasts??

10 of My Favorite Singular Story Podcasts (#5)

Podcasts. You know the drill. If you drive, run, cook, work, or have extra time and are tired of listening to music or silence, you’ve probably loaded up a podcast. Now before we jump into it, I’ve already done this four other times, so feel free to check out my other 40 podcasts I listen to:

Up (4) Another 10 Podcasts To Check Out In 2018 - October 2018
10 Podcasts (X3) To Listen To In 2018 - February 2018
10 More Podcasts You Should Listen to Today - October 2017
Top 10 Podcasts To Listen To Today - April 2017

Update: Check out the newest 10 at Let’s Talk Podcasts #6

Okay, ready to go? All of the podcasts this time are singular stories told within each pod. Most are true crime stories and all are pretty addicting. If you are up for it, let’s jump on in to another 10 podcasts I listen to.

10. The Wonderland Murders by Hollywood & Crime

“In 1981 four people were brutally murdered in their home in the Hollywood Hills. The Wonderland Murders is the tale of a violent home invasion robbery and the revenge rampage that followed. It involves a drug-fueled gang of criminals, a crazed crime kingpin– and the world’s most famous porn star on a downward and deadly spiral.”

Too many ads, not enough background information. It probably would be good if I already knew the story behind this, but then again, there were so many ads, it was hard to keep going. But only seven, 45 minute episodes, so give it a whirl, but maybe research it up first.

9. Homecoming

“Homecoming centers on a caseworker at an experimental facility, her ambitious supervisor, and a soldier eager to rejoin civilian life — presented in an enigmatic collage of telephone calls, therapy sessions, and overheard conversations. The result is an innovative, immersive audio experience — a mystery unfolding across the twelve episodes of Seasons One and Two.”

The TV show is pretty dope! I watched it before the podcast, so have a little different perspective. But the podcast moves along well and features David Schwimmer (Ross from Friends), Oscar Isaac, Catherine Keener, Amy Sedaris, and David Cross. This scripted series consists of 2, six part seasons and is pretty thrilling. Highly recommend the TV series on Amazon Prime as well!

8. Empire on Blood

"In the Bronx, in the early 90s, two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” They lived large, wearing mink, drinking champagne, getting rich. Then their fraught relationship fell apart, dead bodies piled up, and one accused the other of a double homicide he didn’t commit. Or did he? We hear from the cops, the DA, the terrified eyewitnesses, the dealer doing life, and the dealer who put him there."

Empire on Blood is a well told podcast of wrongful conviction. It keeps the details a one time thing, no repeating of facts/details over and over like a lot of other podcasts, so be sure to listen to the story of how Cal tries to get this life sentenced overturned. Journalist Steve Fishman presents seven years of work into just 7 episodes.

7. A Killing on the Cape

"It was a crime that rocked an idyllic seaside town in Cape Cod – the 2002 murder of Christa Worthington, found stabbed to death with her 2-year-old daughter, unharmed at her side. What came next was a three-year search for her killer that would involve unorthodox steps by police, a lengthy list of potential suspects, and an entire town under suspicion. Christa’s trash collector, Christopher McCowen, would eventually be convicted of the crime, but his trial would raise questions about the evidence, investigative methods, and whether racial prejudice played a role.”

A Killing on the Cape, which is presented by ABC Radio and 20/20, follows the twisted tale of the murder of Christa Worhtington in Cape Cod in 2002. It is only a six part series that you will get through quick. After listening, let me know who you think did it. Shout out to Nikki for telling me about this one!

a killing on the cape podcast.png

6. The Teacher’s Pet

"A star footballer. His school girl lover.  A wife who vanishes. Chris and Lyn appear to have the perfect marriage. But when Lyn goes missing, dark secrets are buried. This is no fairytale, but a sordid story of strangely close twin brothers, teenage student lovers, and probable murder.”

The Teacher’s Pet is an Australian based true crime podcast about the story of Lyn Dawson who goes missing without a trace in 1982. Her husband Chris Dawson is a star Aussie rules football player and starts dating his former student, and babysitter of his children immediately after. Crazy 16 episode story. To be honest, some of the episodes drag on too long, repeating the same facts over and over again. But who doesn’t love an Australian accent? Worth the listen and still somewhat ongoing as the case has been reopened!

5. A Murder on Orchard Street

“Follow the breakneck twists and turns of a strange, unsolved 2003 homicide where our reporter delves into her original recordings in an attempt to change the course of the case completely. Experience the case from every angle — from the perspectives of the initial suspect, detectives, witnesses and the determined family of the victim, Burke O’Brien.”

Could you imagine seeing your best friend get murdered and then being blamed for the crime? Another true crime podcast you will fly through as it is only seven episodes that range from 15-20 minutes long.

orchard street murder.jpg

4. Bear Brook

“Two barrels. Four bodies. And the decades-long mystery that led to a serial killer. A podcast about a cold case that's changing how murders will be investigated forever.”

Again, a true crime podcast that is only 7 episodes long! The trend continues! Sad story about four unidentified murdered girls who’s bodies are found in the woods. Despite the topic, it is very interesting to see how websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe can give additional information and clues to murder investigations.

bear brook.png

3. Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football

“Football star Aaron Hernandez went from the bright lights of the Super Bowl to a convicted murderer in a few years. The Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team, takes a hard look at the crisis facing football through the lens of Aaron Hernandez’s life and terrible crimes. Spotlight uncovered new documents, audio, and interviews to go deep into the story of what happened to Aaron Hernandez, and what it means for those of us who cheer on a violent game. ”

If you are into football or murder, this podcast is the one for you. Gladiator covers once New England Patriot tight end Aaron Hernandez and his rise and fall. Again, only seven episodes, this podcast does a great job giving background on Aaron Hernandez’s upbringing, football life, personal habits, and more. It will leave you questioning if football is safe, among other things (no spoilers). Highly recommend this podcast made by Wondery.

2. Believed

“How did Larry Nassar, an Olympic gymnastics doctor, get away with abusing hundreds of women and girls for two decades? Believed is an inside look at how a team of women won a conviction in one of the largest serial sexual abuse cases in U.S. history. It's a story of survivors finding their power in a cultural moment when people are coming to understand how important that is. It's also an unnerving exploration of how even well-meaning adults can fail to believe.”

NPR podcast produced through Michigan Radio, this 9 part series will make you sick to your stomach as convicted sex offender Larry Nassar gets away with his brutal crimes for decades. The title, "Believed”, is perfect because that is exactly what nobody did for these poor innocent girls. It will make you think twice about who you believe, especially when women and children, who have been pushed behind the scenes for so long, stand up and speak out. It even features a girl who goes to my alma mater, Adrian College, who was abused by Larry growing up. The dude is a sicko and this story should be heard by all so it doesn’t happen again.

Believed_1500x800.png

1. Dr. Death

"We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system. Dr. Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away. But soon his patients started to experience complications. And all they had to protect them was a system ill equipped to stop the madness."

Dr. Death is a Wondery Podcast, who has made previous podcasts I’ve listened to like Sword & Scale, Dirty John, American History Tellers, and a handful of other podcasts in this blog. They seem to be constantly kicking out great material! Dr. Death is a twisted true story about a Doctor who had no idea what he was doing in Texas from 2011 to 2013. The 6 part series details gruesome descriptions of what this guy did and how the medical system failed to protect it’s patients. One of the worst parts is that he first operated on his best friend… Not sure if he is clinically insane or just a terrible human. This will make you question any doctor, if you don’t already!

Bonus Podcast: A Very Fatal Murder (Bonus)

“David Pascall is in search of the perfect murder — a murder so beautiful, so moving that it could be the subject of his new podcast for OPR.”

Think American Vandal (netflix), but in podcast form. The seven episodes are only 10 minutes each and will give you a good laugh. So if you want a break from these heavy, true crime podcasts, give this parody one by Onion Public Radio a try.

And that’s that. As a reminder, this brings us to 50 (+1) total podcasts. Check out the other 40 podcasts I have suggested in the past (linked above).

And as always, feel free to suggest any podcasts you are listening to.

Up (4) Another 10 Podcasts to Check Out in 2018

By now you should all know I am about that Podcast life. Lots of driving, lots of running, lots of cooking, lots of working. All great times to listen to podcasts. In just over a year and a half I have 10 more of my favorite podcasts. That is a total of 40 in that time. 8 Month ago I came out with 10 PODCASTS (X3) TO LISTEN TO IN 2018. 4 months before that, I released 10 More Podcasts You Should Listen to Today. And 6 months prior to that, in April of 2017, I wrote my first post called, "Top 10 Podcasts To Listen To Today".

Update: Check out the newest 20 at Let’s Talk Podcasts #6 and Singular Story #5

If you are up for it, let’s jump into the another 10 podcasts you should check out in 2018.

10. Limetown

"Ten years ago, over three hundred men, women and children disappeared from a small town in Tennessee, never to be heard from again. American Public Radio reporter Lia Haddock asks the question once more, "What happened to the people of Limetown?""

Limetown is a fun fictional podcast series that is only 6 episodes. It’s a pretty simple story line narrated by a woman reporter and the series ends with a bang. The narration reminds me of the 1996 Play Station video game Resident Evil. Rumor has it season two will be released on Halloween 2018.

9. Cults

"Mystery. Manipulation. Murder. Cults are associated with all of these. But what really goes on inside a cult? More specifically, what goes on inside the minds of people who join cults and leaders who start them? Every Tuesday, Greg and Vanessa explore the history and psychology behind the most notorious cults. Cults is part of the Parcast Network and is a Cutler Media production."

Cults is the sister podcast to my #1 podcast from my last pod blog, Serial Killers. Greg and Vanessa (the hosts) do a great job explaining what goes into cults, how they begin, and how they eventually fall apart and end. Definitely check it out if you enjoyed Serial Killers or are interested in cults. With over 50 episodes you may need to browse to find an episode of your cult of choice. I suggest starting with episodes 1-2 on The Manson Family and then 3-4 on Heaven’s Gate. One of my other favs is about The People’s Temple and Jim Jones, episodes 19 & 20.

8. My Dad Wrote a Porno

"Imagine if your dad wrote a dirty book. Most people would try to ignore it - but not Jamie Morton. Instead, he decided to read it to the world in this groundbreaking comedy podcast. With the help of his best mates, James Cooper and Alice Levine, Jamie reads a chapter a week and discovers more about his father than he ever bargained for."

Cringey names and descriptions, awkward situations, sexual encounters, hilarious stuff. I’m not super into comedy podcasts currently, so this is my first comedy podcast I’ve posted about, but it seems like something my Dad could pull off. Definitely listen if you are in for a good laugh about the sexy story behind Belinda Blumenthal, who works sales in the pot and pans industry. The series gets a little repetitive, but I suggest listening to season one, or at least episode one. Funny stuff.

7. Kexp Presents Music That Matters

"Check out some of the KEXP DJ's favorite artists from the Pacific Northwest and around the world on-the-go. KEXP's Music That Matters weekly podcast brings you an exclusive mix of new music from the world's best independent artists."

Another music podcast for you since I love music, & love listening to new artists. This podcast from Seattle radio station KEXP includes hour long sessions, hosted by a DJ, of new and inspiring music of all genres. Some of my favorite episodes in this podcast are the running ones which give you upbeat music to listen to on your run and even some inspirational quotes. Many of the DJ sets include KEXP songs of the day.  KEXP song of the day was featured in the 3rd installment of 10 podcasts I enjoy listening to. You won’t find many chart toppers in the sessions, but if you like independent music, check this out.

6. Endless Thread

"The front page of the Internet--also known as Reddit--is making noise. Hosts Ben Brock Johnson and Amory Sivertson dig into the site's vast and curious ecosystem of online communities, collaborating with Reddit's 330 million users and over 140 thousand communities to find all kinds of jaw-dropping narratives. A collaboration between WBUR and Reddit."

A plethora of stories from redditors! I am a frequent lurker of Reddit, and if you are not, check it out and you just might become one as well. This podcast cover a variety of topics, posts, and stories that all come from reddit. Good story telling with some insightful comments from the people of reddit. Stories can be interesting, funny, informing, scary or just straight up out there.

6 endless thread .jpg

5. Lore

"Lore is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed podcast about true life scary stories. Lore exposes the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares. Because sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction."

Shoutout to Mary for letting me know about this podcast. Great non-fictional scary stories told every week, which is closing in on its 100th episode. I really enjoy the host of Lore and his story telling style. Episodes are around 35 minutes and will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you are in for some frightening truthful stories from around the world, give it a listen.

5 Lore.png

4. Criminal

"Criminal Is A Podcast About Crime. Stories of people who've done wrong, been wronged, or gotten caught somewhere in the middle."

Criminal is produced through Radiotopia, the podcast group of many of my favorites including 99% Invisible, Ear Hustle, Song Exploder and more! Criminal is hosted by Phoebe Judge, and features weekly stories of crime. I really enjoy the soothing yet spooky voice of Phoebe as she tells new 25 minute stories each week. They just eclipsed episode 100, so you have a large sampling to choose from.

3. Eat This Not That

"Eat This, Not That! takes a fun and informative look at how Americans eat. Whether it’s what we eat for breakfast on the go, what we pack for lunch, or how we fill our shopping cart and stock our pantry, we make more than 300 food decisions every day. Together, we’ll learn how to make better choices and eat all of our favorite foods, guilt-free!"

The “healthy” side of me got me interested in this one. Short little stories about food and what healthy choices we can make. Give these 15-25 minute episodes a listen for quick tips on how to store food in your fridge, how to cook meat properly, the best snacks to eat, ways to save at the supermarket and more!

3 eat this not that.jpeg

2. American History Tellers

"Every part of your life -the words you speak, the ideas you share- can be traced to our history, but how well do you really know the stories that made America? We’ll take you to the events, the times and the people that shaped our nation. And we’ll show you how our history affected them, their families and affects you today."

This Wondery podcast (also created Sword and Scale & Dirty John from previous top 10 posts) hosted by Lindsay Graham features stories about specific historic events. It’s not your typical boring history lesson though. The host will set the scene, having you imagine you are there at that specific moment in history with great descriptors and detail. The show is up to 7 season so far, including the Cold War, Prohibition, the Age of Jackson, the Space Race, Natural Parks and the American Revolution. If you are interested in any of these topics, take a story telling deep dive into them through 6-8 part series where the narrator will put you in the shoes of a person living during that time.

2 american history storytellers.jpeg

1. Crimetown

"Welcome to Crimetown. Every season, we’ll investigate the culture of crime in a different American city. First up: Providence, Rhode Island, where organized crime and corruption infected every aspect of public life. This is a story of alliances and betrayals, of heists and stings, of crooked cops and honest mobsters—a story where it’s hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. Hosted by Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier."

Easily the best podcast I’ve listened to over the past months has been Crimetown. It is simply so good. The first season is all about the true story of the mob in Providence, Rhode Island, home of Deer Tick, in the 20th century. With real audio recordings and interviews, the show blends multiple story lines of crime and characters throughout the season, drawing similarities to the tv show, The Wire. With characters like politician Buddy Cianci, master thief Tony Fiore, and crime boss Raymond Patriarca, you’ll be locked in from episode one. Oh, be sure to binge listen through all 18 episodes of season one, so you can prepare for season two, which is set to begin October 2018. I know I can’t wait for it.
