Champs at Last

This past week started on the 3rd of June, a lovely tuesday. After work I started to go through my tee shirt drawers. I definitely have way more tees than I need, so I started to get rid of some. I even got rid of some of my Championship tees from high school. Check out how many I had. All Vintage Lacrosse America Champion Tees. We won so many in Indoor or Fall Ball, but when it came to the season, we could never pull out a state championship, let alone win a playoff game, except for one year. Also important to note, about 1/2 of these shirts are XLs, the other have Large. Ahh the life of a champion. I have known it as a player, but never as a coach, the  weekend will give me another shot at it. I also have to give a little nod to my 14 year old DARE shirt that I received in 5th grade, year 2000. DAREing 2BME since 2000.

Later that night I loaded up Anchorman 2 and watched it in bed. Squid joined to watch, I fell asleep, but caught most of it, great movie.

Wednesday the 4th of June was the first day for me and Gio working out at the Gym directly behind us. Beyond Measure Training is run by a local guy our age, and I signed up for a month trial membership with Gio. So far we have been pretty consistent and it feels good to get back to working out. I really enjoy how they have the workouts planned for you and you do not have to do much thinking, however, I will most likely continue working out in my basement for free after the month of June, but this is a great kickstart to summer. Jacked and Tanned, summer 2014. For my second to last practice with my 8th graders, I set up a parents vs kids game for the last hour of practice. It was a great game and the parents who came out really enjoyed it and had a blast. The greatest part of the game was when a kid was heading toward the net and his dad was playing defense, just stood him up like a brick wall and leveled his son. It was a great hit. Awesome. Wednesday night I watched the movie Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. It was a pretty cool movie, with great graphics, since I imagine most of it was filmed in a green screen. It was much shorter than I thought, just over 90 minutes, but had some great cinematography and soundtrack. I give it an A-

On June 5th, Thursday, Gio and I worked out again in the morning at 8 am. Had a decent day at work and then headed over to watch the 8th grade B All-Star game for a few kids I had nominated for the game. I was able to nominate 5 guys, so I nominated 1 from each position, attack, mid, defense, LSM, & Goalie. My kids played really well, despite their team not being the best. Their team also only had 3 long poles, 2 of them from my team. Like I told my kids, the whole team deserved to be there. That night I started the movie Jobs. From the first 30 minutes of the movie, I came to the conclusion which I already knew. Steve Jobs was a jerk. People claim he is a great business man, which I guess he is? but was a mean and terrible person. I didn't finish the movie, but I will some day.

Friday June 6th. After work, I headed over to my last practice with my 8th graders. I invited a handful of guys who had played with me 2 years ago and a few other high schoolers. Before I got there, I made a couple of pit stops. First at Sports Authority to buy a Bosu Ball. $120 dollars later, well only actually 80, had a gift reward thing for 40, I headed over to my coach from 8th grade, Doug's house. He had coached Gio, Sean, and I to a 8th grade championship back in the day. The blue middies beat the red team from Naperville. Anyways, I was buying an Iron Gym off of his son who is a freshman in HS and plays lax as well. I chatted with him for a bit and he told me a funny story how he had just found a condom is his son's backpack. His kid was going to a co-ed birthday party and had a backpack, so he searched it. His son claimed that him and his friends were going to fill it with diet coke and mentos and watch it explode.. Hilarious... but wow, freshman in highschool these days.

I then made it over to practice where I had a good start to the last practice before the championship weekend. The last half of practice that day, we had another little scrimmage, my team vs my previous players, some highschoolers, and myself. After the fun filled game, which went about 25 minutes after practice (sorry parents... but not really) a couple of the guys I coached 2 years ago (Xander, Brendan, and Jason) wanted to go to BK, so I drove them there and introduced myself to a couple of new sandwiches. The Rodeo Burger and the Rodeo Chicken Sandwich. Normal burger/sandwich but with BBQ sauce and Crispy Onions. Pretty tasty. Their ride was running a little late, so I drove them to my house where we tossed a lax ball on my driveway. This brought back some memories form high school, just playing under the lights on the driveway.

After they left, I quickly packed and headed to Chicago to visit Rachel for the night! John wanted me to pick him up from a friends place, but after driving in circles and making U-turns for some time, I gave up and headed to Rachels. GPS in the city by the tall buildings does not work very well. Rachel was with her mom and aunt, and after chatting with them for a while, they headed home. I was pretty tired from the day, so we just listened to music and talked, then went to bed.

On Saturday June 7th, Rachel and I spent the day hanging out until John came over. Once he was over, we did a bunch of Colorado planning, that trip will be coming in August. For dinner, we walked down the street to a bar called Sedgwick's. I had a burger of some sort which was pretty good. They also had the crinkly fries which were might tasty. I need better words to describe food. We picked up some white whisky and ginger ale to have whisky gingers for the evening. Rachel's new favorite drink! Later that evening, we went to a party for her friend Becca from work in Lincoln Park. After the party we walked about 2 miles home to Rachel's place, and also encountered either a homeless or very drunk or a combo of both, woman outside of McDonald's. Once we got back to her place, I went out to McDonald's to get us a late night snack as we loaded up Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. We both fell asleep watching after about 30 minutes or so.

Championship Sunday was finally here. June 8th, the U15 B division IBLA championships. I got ready in the morning and headed out around 10am with Rachel to Elmhurst where the games would be taking place. I was feeling good, had my All-American stick, and the weather was beautiful. My team was also ready to play. Coming in as the top seed, we rolled through the first 2 teams to get into the Championship game. We then watched the 2 and 3 seed play to see who would be playing us. The game went into 2 overtimes and ended with a couple of fist fights, where punches were thrown and kids were being tossed around. I asked, but somehow, no one was kicked out for the next game. I also told the refs I wanted to start right away, and that since we were the home team, we would be wearing white (the other team was as well). A couple of power moves and I knew the game would be ours. Here is the bracket, it would end with FV playing Bartlett for the championship. #1 vs #3.

We had a slow start and fell down 2-0. After 3 goals, one of my players took a pretty big hit with about 8 minutes left in the first half. We were up 3-2 and had the momentum, but now we had a 20 minute delay as an ambulance was called. The kid ended up being alright, probably just a concussion, but I did not let him go back in. To my fortune, the team got fired up after the hit and we exploded out and didn't stop. We kept at it the whole game, and as the seconds wound down and I looked up at the clock, it read 8-4 good guys. Right before the clock hit 0 I felt a rush of cold water hit my back. The gatorade bath was upon me. I didn't expect it, and my team got me good with a nice cold shower. We were champions. I had come close before, but now I finally had my first championship as a coach. I couldn't be more proud of my guys, they fought hard all year. We dog piled, got the trophy, took the pics, and celebrated. Below is a little gallery from the post game that Rachel was able to snap. Play the jam as the pictures roll. Amazing day, that would be followed up with a team party after the drive home.

The team party on Sunday evening was a great ending to a great season. We had bueno beef catering and I was able to get a few adult drinks in before getting up in front of everyone to give a speech. Before I started talking, all of the kids started chanting "Candyman, Candyman, Candyman" over and over which was pretty funny and awesome. They had gotten the nickname from my Apaches jersey that I had worn at Friday's practice. I gave a short recap speech about the year, then I talked about each individual player as I handed them custom handcrafted wooden shafts that one of the parents had made for each player. After talking for about 20 or 30 minutes I was done and the party ended. Many players and parents came up to me to thank me for the great year. It was a very satisfying feeling and I felt like I had made a difference in many of these kids and parents lives. Rachel was amazing and my good luck charm for coming to the games! She snapped a photo of me giving my speech in the crowded room. Such a loving and amazing girlfriend I have!

It is hard to believe the year is over. I will miss each and every one of my players, they all came so far during the season and will all do great things in the future. I ended my speech with a little piece on putting in work outside of practice. Hopefully some of them were listening, despite the side chatter. Each year I have favorite kids and really enjoy coaching my teams. This year was by far the most talented team I have coached, and my favorite team from a holistic approach. Many great memories and player/coach relationships. What a year!

After an amazing and tiring day on Sunday. Monday the 9th of June brought another big day in my life. My first photo shoot, which I had been prepping for for at least a week. Here are a couple shots from the photo shoot, which ended up taking 12 hours. It should have taken about 4 after my calculations... 3 hours to set up, 2 food breaks taking 2 hour total, and another 3 hours of moving the photo equipment around for unnecessary reasons. 8 hours that could have easily been knocked off, instead we spent 12 hours for the shoot, hopefully we got at least one good pic. I was diving on to some very thin and hard mats, there was fog that I tried not to inhale, and there was no smiling. I consider it a success! We will see in a few weeks once we get the pics back.

I leave you a pretty amazing video about a motorcycle. Enjoy it and enjoy life, as a champion.

Grill Season

It is that time of the year. Bring out the grill, bring out the charcoal, and bring out the meats.

Last Tuesday, the 20th of May, Rachel took the train from the city out to Naperville to visit me. What a wonderful amazing woman I have! I had picked up some burgers earlier in the week, so we were planning on grilling them.  A storm was brewing in the skies, and it took us over 45 minutes to drive 9 miles home from the train station. Thanks Naperville traffic.

We got the burgers grilling, and the storm began to roll in, unfortunately I didn't get the coals quite hot enough to cook them in the 6 minutes they required in the directions. After about 20 minutes of grilling, the wind started to blow and the rain began to come down. I just finished up with the burgers, getting them inside with just a little bit of water on them. Not a bad cookout.

On Wednesday May 21st, I suited up with my team for practice and finished editing a BenU v Aurora lax game from earlier in the season. I think it turned out pretty well. Check it out below.

On Thursday morning, I mowed my lawn, and worked on a highlight tape for a customer of mine. In the afternoon around 5, after work, I headed over to Benet Academy to film a second round playoff lacrosse game. Benet took on Hinsdale Central and I was able to film the game at John's Alma Mater. They have some solid players on the team, a few going D1, and I think have a real shot at winning state in the A division, which has been won by New Trier or Loyola for the last 10 years or so. I picked up some BK on the way home, 2 for 1 whoppers, allowing me to have some dinner and then lunch for Friday. Check out the highlights from the game, which I pumped out in a little less than 24 hours. Another solid edit in my opinion.

On the 23rd of May Friday, I practice a little bit with my team again, as we had a scrimmage against our C team. I mixed the 2 teams together and it turned out to be pretty fun. I finished the video above later that night.

On Saturday, while the semi finals for lacrosse were happening, I secured a regular season title for my FV 8th grade team, beating the other undefeated team by a score of 7 to 5. Now we just have 2 weeks and 2 tournaments left! Wow the year has flown by! For dinner, John and I decided to have another cookout, grilling burgers and a couple of hot dogs in his back yard this time. Charcoal is king, and that is all we use, so we did that up. Later that night, I met up with Brian, Chris, Alyssa, Zack, Jessi, and a couple of other friends for a few drinks at Tommy Nevins down the road. They had bud light specials that came in a red plastic Blackhawks cup for the game. I was able to snag 8 of these from our table to take home for Squid. Go Hawks (even though they have been sucking). Rachel was at the WhiteSox game while this was going on and sent me this cute picture.

Sunday the 25th, I was scheduled to have a private lesson at 10am, however, the person never showed up. This was pretty disappointing since that meant I could have headed to the city earlier, however, I didn't let it ruin my mood. At around 11am I drove into the city to hang out with Rachel. After lunch we walked about a mile and half down Clark, to where I may be residing in the near future, and went to Dave's Record shop with her roommate Aly & her siblings. It was a pretty cool shop and they had a BUNCH of records, new and old to choose from. I didn't pick up any this time, but I see this becoming a place I will be spending a decent amount of time. Got to love the feel of an old vinyl album. After the record shop, we picked up a  couple of ice creams from McDonald's. I went with the vanilla cone dipped in chocolate and Rach had a oreo McFlurry. Tasty on a hot spring afternoon.

After McDonald's we headed on a walk and stumbled upon a hidden Lilly Pond. It was so peaceful and calming, just a beautiful setting to have on such a lovely day. After hanging out there for a while and seeing a mother duck and some ducklings, we walked down to North Ave beach and enjoyed some time at the beach and in the sun.

IMG_1682.JPG

That evening Rachel and I headed to a restaraunt in the oppostie direction we usually head out, but it was actually closer than the others we normally go to. It was off Lincoln and called Risselli's or something like that. We each had a beer and some delicious pizza with sausage, onion, and green pepper. Very tasty. We walked back home and then played one on one Taboo, even though the game claims it is for 4+ players, we played with 2. Take that Taboo. After some wine and taboo, we headed off to bed.

Monday May 26th allowed us to extend the weekend since it was Memorial Day. We woke up relatively early and headed down to the beach around 10am for an early morning, since storms were predicted for noon. Luckily for us the day was perfect and sunny, no storms ever rolled through. When at the beach, we met up with Brian and Shaina and watched Brian play volleyball for a match or two. In typical Brian fashion, he invited us over to "play" but didn't let us play because he claims we were not good enough. Rachel's roommates Mary and Aly and their boyfriends came down about an hour later. We also met up with Ashley and one of her friends from Lombard. After spending some hours in the sun, and going up to my thighs in the chilly water, Brian, Shaina, Rachel, & I walked through Old Town over to the Burger Bar and had some tasty burgers for lunch.

Speaking of lunch. Hot Dogs or Legs? You decide!

Speaking of lunch. Hot Dogs or Legs? You decide!

That evening, Rachel and I played bags with Aly and her bf Jay while grilling up some BBQ chicken. We had BBQ chicken sandwiches for dinner which were delicious. We watched the first episode of True Detective which seems like an awesome show. I am excited to perhaps catch a few more episodes. After watching the Blackhawks do poorly in the first and second periods, I headed to bed for an early night. I guess I missed watching both the semi finals and the National Championship for lax this year. That is alright, I wasn't a big fan of any of the teams. Spoiler Alert, Duke Wins.

I drove back home on Tuesday morning of the 27th, then headed to work. After work, where Beth was interviewed, I got the grilll fired up one last time for this week and grilled up some Italian Sausage. I then diced it up and threw it in some pasta I had made along with a home made vinegrette sauce that involves oil, vinegar, garlic, honey, and salt & pepper. A pretty tasty dinner I might say. The storms looked to be brewing again, but held off on this Tuesday.

All this talk about Cookouts and Grilling makes me want to post our past Cookouts. Enjoy watching and I'll see you next week.

Can't wait for more cookouts with YaBoys this summer.

Graduating Squid

My sister, the little squid is a college graduate. But first... let's breeze through the boring stuff.

Tuesday May 13th I finished another lax highlight video. I also finished one on Monday May 19th. Both are posted below. The second involved the best lacrosse I've seen all year. Enjoy

On Wednesday the 14th of May I threw on my old pads and practiced with my 8th grade lax team, showing them a thing or two. Felt good to be back out there. This was also the date of the flower moon, the 5th full moon of the year... unfortunately it was too cloudy and rainy to see when I was still awake, so I missed it. I'll get the next one! First moon miss of the year, disappointing to all my moon gazers, I know.

On Thursday, my parents and I headed out on our 6 hour drive to Mizzou for the last time to see Beth graduate. I packed my trusty game boy color and collective games including SuperMarioLand, NinjaTurtles, Donkey Kong, BrickBlast, & Pokemon Red to provide me some entertainment for the trip. Also started to read The Shining and am about 50 pages in, quality read so far!

Once we arrived, we were ready to get the party started. As we headed out, Paige needed to pop her tiger cherry, Squid & I did some time ago, so we headed over to the tiger and took a ride. Around 9:30p my parents dropped Beth, Paige, & I off at some club named Roxy's for a night of $5 bottomless double well drinks. I went with the whisky coke, Beth and Paige went with some type of lemonade or sprite and vodka. The night was full of dancing and drinking on the dance floor. As I looked at the clock and saw it was 11:55pm and the free drinks were ending at mindnight, I headed over to the bar one last time. I aquired 2 whisky cokes, 2 vodka lemonades and headed bakc through a mass of people to find Squid and Paige and some other of their friends. As I was walking, drinkings filled to the brim, held above peoples heads, I surely spilled on quite a few people, apologizing throughout. The best was when I was right where Beth and Paige were and someone back into me, and I spilt a helping of drink on this girl behind us who then said, "Oh no you didn't, you spilt on my weave!" I apologized kinldy and gave her one of my whisky cokes, which she took a couple of sips out of and threw out promptly. We finsihed what we could of our drinks and then headed over to hotbox cookies to get some tasty cookies before taking some magical bus home.

IMG_1651.JPG

On the bus, I chatted with the some others who were going to graduate and found out Jen and Kim? were also headed to a similar area on the bus, striking. Beth wanted me to sit down for a majority of the ride, but I insisted on standing. Finally we arrived at our stop and I tipped that friendly bus driver man $2. He tried to refuse, but I didn't let him.

Once in Beth's apartment we found her other roommate Allison sleeping, but not for long. She had to write some paper, so we woke her up and got her to work, or something like that. Around 3am the night came to end, with me snoring on the couch, and Beth getting ready for her final at 10AM.

On Friday, after our night out, Beth took her final and got a 157/160 or something crazy like that. It pays to study hard kids! Most of Friday was spent preparing for graduation that evening and going around and taking pictures. Here are a bunch of pictures of Beth / Paige / families from Friday afternoon around Mizzou's beautiful campus.

For dinner, we met up with the rest of the fam: Grandma, Aunt Ruth, Jan, & Lillian at AppleBee's, One of Beth's favorite places to eat. After dinner, we headed over to Mizzou basketball arena, for the Journalism school graduation!

We made it about an hour early, but got some prime parking and prime seats, thanks dad. Here are a bunch of pics from the graduation. So happy and proud of Beth for graduating! What a squid! The ceremony ended with the most pathetic cap toss I have ever seen. You may or may not be able to tell, but there is a picture of it.

IMG_1663.PNG

Friday night we had a little celebration at Beth's apartment with our family and Paige's. Here is a lovely snapchat beth sent out of me after we had already celebrated with the champagne and were onto those ever so tasty Summer Shandies. Can this photo be true if I was the only one drinking? I finished off the 12 pack of shandies as the night faded away and we were again, up until about 3am. College.

Saturday the 17th of May called for an early rise, around 7am because Beth and Paige had to go and be smart during college, so they were graduating with honors and headed to the honors graduation ceremony. My extended family, grandma and aunts, were just going to stay until Beth's name was called and then head out since they had places to go. With this in mind, Beth and Paige arrived late to the ceremony and were given the honor of last row for the ceremony. We only had to wait about 1000 names before theirs were called. You can tell in the pics how happy the fans were, and how awake Beth and Paige were. The nice thing was they were right next to each other and got to enjoy the 2 hour ceremony. Here are some shots from that day. Squid standing up to receive honors for being a nerd. Then she grabs her medal.

DSC_4780.JPG

After the graduation ceremony number 2, we went out to eat at Glenn's Cafe in downtown Columbia. I had a tasty burger, and also went to a candy store before hand and picked up some delicious candy legos, fruity sticks, & my favorite, fruit slices. After lunch we headed back to Beth's apartment to quickly pack up the cars (I'll be driving baby blue home) and then drive 6 hours back... not. Beth had not packed anything yet, so 5 hours later, at 5pm we finally got on the road. I drove baby blue home all by myself, and was jamming out to the radio for the whole trip. Some quality stations around St Louis, including one that was playing 90s alternative for awhile. As we reached later into the night and were nearing home, Night Prowler by AC/DC came on the radio. A song that Nolan and I used to jam to late at night in my college days back at Adrian. Oh the memories.

The trip was a great success, I am so happy and proud of Beth for graduating, but cannot believe college is already over for her as well. How the time flies. Enjoy every moment, and I know she did with thousands of great memories from school.

On Sunday, May 18th, I slept until 11am after going to sleep right when I got home from Mizzou, giving me about 11 hours of sleep. Then I headed over to Danny & Sarah's current residnence for a birthday party for their 1 year old Sophia! The party was a hit, and the weather was perfect. I had to leave a little early to head to a lax game, but here are some pics while I was there!

What a great weekend it was indeed. Beth graduates, Sophia turns 1, & everyone has a grand old time. With the weather being warmer and the moods heightening, I am excited for summer which is right around the corner!

And before I end this lovely family blog post, I will add a few things about lacrosse. The Thompson brothers, Miles & Lyle, of Albany became the first teammates in D1 history to have over 100 points in the same season. They both broke the single season record for points as well, Miles with 119 and brother Lyle with 128. It was disappointing to hear they got bumped out of the playoffs by Notre Dame in OT. On the other side of lacrosse in the D3 world, Tufts teammates John Upgren, Cole Bailey, & Beau Wood become the first 3 way teammates in history to have over 100 points with 120, 107, & 102 respectively. That is some serious point production from all 5 of these guys.

Also the new Apache jersey's came in, only 6 months late, but they are awesome. CandyMan baby!

I leave you with this great lacrosse video produced by a former college/mll player. Band Together or Go Home. Lacrosse is a team game, live it, love it.
